Crime Analysis certificate program

The Graduate Certificate in Crime Analysis is an 18-credit-hour program of study. The certificate program is flexible enough to be adapted to the needs of pre-career and in-service individuals.

Graduates who complete the Graduate Certificate in Crime Analysis can expect to be competitive for jobs in government agencies and other organizations that work strategically to prevent crime and problems related to crime.

Completing the graduate certificate will prepare students to take the exam to become a Certified Law Enforcement Analyst, a program offered by the International Association of Crime Analysts. Students can earn approximately 60 points toward the required 100 points needed to become a Certified Law Enforcement Analyst by completing the certificate.

Required courses (12 credit hours)

This course examines research techniques necessary for systematic analysis of the criminal justice system, offenders' behavior, crime trends, and program effectiveness. The course requires that students actively pursue such techniques as conducting interviews, coding data, and designing studies. (3 credit hours)

The objective of this class is to help students understand the techniques of crime analysis and crime mapping and how they are practiced in everyday policing. The course will focus on discussing issues in crime analysis and crime mapping, critiquing current practices, and reviewing some of the technology that is used. The following are the topics that will be covered: introduction to the crime analysis field and history; environmental criminology; police effectiveness and the role of analysis; the crime analysis process, data, and technology; specific techniques and examples used in tactical, strategic, and administrative crime analysis. (3 credit hours)

The use of geographic information systems (GIS) to map locations of events and analyze patterns for decision-making and facility location in areas of public safety including criminal justice, fire services, emergency management, and homeland security. This course also includes discussion and analysis of the management and application of those systems. (3 credit hours)

Noncalculus survey of concepts in probability, estimation, and hypothesis testing. Applications of contingency table analysis and analysis of variance, regression, and other statistical techniques. Computer processing of data emphasized.

Electives (6 credit hours)

Two additional O’Neill graduate courses that cannot include independent research studies, readings, or internship classes. Electives include, but are not limited to, Mapping and Analysis for Public Safety, Law and Public Affairs, and Public Safety Law.
